What Is a Pure Sequence in Rummy? Pure vs Impure Sequence

September 20, 2026 · Yono Rummy

One of the most searched rummy questions is: what is a pure sequence? Without understanding it, you cannot make a valid declaration.

Pure sequence

Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, with no joker used.

Examples: 4♠ 5♠ 6♠ or J♦ Q♦ K♦.

Impure sequence

The same kind of sequence, but with a joker (wild or printed) standing in for a missing card.

Example: 4♠ [Joker] 6♠ - here the joker replaces 5♠.

Why is a pure sequence so important?

Under standard rummy rules every valid declaration needs at least one pure sequence. Without it your declaration is wrong even if every other group is correct.

How to make a pure sequence quickly

  • At the start, collect adjacent cards of the same suit first.
  • A-2-3 and Q-K-A style runs are valid in many apps (check the in-app rules).
  • Throw away lonely high cards early to make room for sequence cards.

Only after your pure sequence is ready should you plan how to use jokers for the rest. Read how jokers work in rummy next.
