How Does a Joker Work in Rummy? Wild Joker vs Printed Joker

The joker is the most powerful card in rummy because it can replace any other card. But there are rules for using it.

Printed joker

A separate joker card that is part of the deck. It always works as a joker.

Wild joker

After the deal, one card is opened. All cards of that rank (in all four suits) become jokers for that game. For example, if the opened card is 8♦, every 8 is a wild joker.

Where can a joker be used?

• In a set: yes, to fill a missing card.
• In an impure sequence: yes.
• In a pure sequence: no.

Using jokers well

Make your pure sequence first. Then use jokers to complete the remaining groups quickly. Throwing a joker away without need is a common mistake.
