October 4, 2026 · Yono Rummy
One of the most common rummy questions is how the rules change with the number of players. The answer depends on which rummy variant you play.
Rummy rules at a glance
| Variant | Players | Cards each |
|---|---|---|
| Indian Rummy (13 card) | 2 to 6 | 13 |
| Classic rummy | 2 | 10 |
| Classic rummy | 3 to 4 | 7 |
| Classic rummy | 5 to 6 | 6 |
| Gin Rummy | 2 | 10 |
13 card rummy rules (2 to 6 players)
This is the Indian format. Each player gets 13 cards, and you must form at least two sequences, one of them a pure sequence, with the rest in sets or sequences. Two players can play it just like six. Read the full 13 card rummy guide.
Rummy rules for 2 players (10 cards)
In classic rummy with two players, each player is dealt 10 cards. You pick a card, make sets (same rank) or runs (same suit, in order) and discard. The first player to meld all their cards wins. Gin Rummy is the best-known two-player version.
Rummy rules for 3 and 4 players (7 cards)
With three or four players, each gets 7 cards. The play is the same - draw, meld, discard - but there are more opponents to watch, so reading discards matters more.
Rummy rules for 5 and 6 players (6 cards)
Larger tables use 6 cards each and usually two decks, so the game moves faster.
